Flashbacks

Apparently I'm not the only one who feels like I've seen this before:

Such attacks have raised worries among Democratic strategists -- haunted by John F. Kerry's 2004 run and Al Gore's razor-thin loss in 2000 -- that Obama has not responded in kind with a parallel assault on McCain's character. Interviews with nearly a dozen Democratic strategists found those concerns to be widespread, although few wished to be quoted by name while Obama's campaign is demanding unity.

[...]

A liberal advertising consultant said: "There's frustration there because they're watching these childish ad campaigns, and they know exactly how to answer it, but they're powerless to do so."

Powerless, that is, because most of the independent groups that would have taken the lead in such an independent campaign have been sidelined by Obama's insistence that Democratic donors channel their money to him, rather than outside groups. Obama's efforts have succeeded in maintaining message discipline in a campaign predicated on what the senator from Illinois has called a new kind of politics.

I'm guessing that as the day progresses there will be accusations of "concern trolls" coming from some in the blogosphere but lately I've been having flashbacks to August 2004 when I would see the Swifties on all the newsnets followed by video of John Kerry windsurfing. It was then that I started to realize that we'd have four more years of the most destructive administration in history.

The big problem I've had with Obama from the beginning was his whole "rising it above it all", "new politics" shtick. Democrats have spent the last couple of decades taking the high road and, not coincidentally, losing much of the time.

I'd love to have clean, respectful campaigns. But I'd love more to win.

It's only the survival of our republic that's at stake.

Overkill

Clear-cut police brutality:

A University of Florida student was Tasered and arrested after trying to ask U.S. Senator John Kerry about the 2004 election and other subjects during a campus forum.

[...]

As two officers take Meyer by the arms, Kerry, D-Massachusetts, is heard to say, "That's alright, let me answer his question." Audience members applaud, and Meyer struggles to escape for several seconds as up to four officers try to remove him from the room.

[...]

As Kerry tells the audience he will answer the student's "very important question," Meyer struggles on the ground and yells at the officers to release him, crying out, "Don't Tase me, bro," just before he is Tasered. He is then led from the room, screaming, "What did I do?"

I don't have the stomach to check but I'm sure the wingnut sites are blaming Kerry for this.

You decide:

Saturday With Sen. And Mrs. Kerry II

"It's 254 pages written on recycled Attorney General Gonzales e-mails. Actually, we couldn't find 'em. We're still looking."

Who says John Kerry can't tell a joke?

On Saturday, Senator John Kerry and his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry made an appearance at a local Barnes & Noble to promote their new book, This Moment on Earth.

Jkthk03dayvoe of 2 Political Junkies and I we're contacted beforehand and asked if we would like to attend. Along with bloggers from the John Kerry Blog and Democratic Underground we had a few minutes before the event to talk the the Senator and Mrs. Kerry in relative privacy. Sen. Kerry discussed the importance of peer-review saying, "All 928 of peer-reviewed studies find that human beings are contributing to global climate change. Not one study to the contrary is peer-reviewed. Not one." In response to a comment of mine, Kerry said of Sen. James Inhofe, "[He's the] flat-earth caucus leader." The Senator then went on to outline the three things the government can do:

1. Energy efficiency

2. Alternative and renewable fuels

3. Clean coal

The Kerrys addressed an packed house. Summarizing their book, the Senator said: "This book is, really, an optimistic book. It should make you angry for five minutes, ten minutes, we hope, and then transfer that into the inspiration that comes out of the stories of all the people we write about and the great things they've accomplished. Average citizens who've made changes and who fought the government to get the accountability and enforcement that they deserve and the law says they should have."Jkthk05

What separates this book from Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth is the focus on everyday people who have practical solutions to the environmental problems facing us. "I was involved in the first Earth Day in 1970. Jkthk05_3
Twenty million people came out and said, 'We're gonna change things.' They created the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Coastal Zone Management Act, and even the Environmental Protection Agency was signed into existence by Richard Nixon in 1972 because of that effort. We made the environment a voting issue."

Mrs. Kerry summed it up best: "This book is a reaffirmation of the quality of thinking and conversation that the American people shared with us on the road."

Oh Please, No

Actually, any campaign by Kerry would probably collapse quickly. But still:

DENVER - Sen. John Kerry (D-Massachusetts) reopened the door to a possible 2008 presidential campaign during a book signing in Denver and then again, in an interview with 9NEWS.

[...]

Afterwards, while answering a question from a viewer on the program YOUR SHOW about why he chose not to run, Kerry said he had decided it wasn't the right time.

"Could that change?" Kerry said. "It might. It may change over years. It may change over months. I can't tell you, but I've said very clearly I don't consider myself out of it forever."

Now to my favorite part of this article:

Colorado's leading Republican chuckled at the news Kerry may embark on another presidential run and insisted, just like in 2004, he would not win Colorado.

"I would welcome John Kerry to the presidential race," said Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dick Wadhams. "He would fit right in with the current crop of candidates on the other side. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, John Kerry, they all represent a really left-wing viewpoint of the Democratic Party." [Emphasis added.]

You have to admit that sometimes Republicans can be pretty funny.
