A Tinker's Damn*

Obama releases a statement condemning Kentucky congressional candidate Nikki Tinker:

"These incendiary and personal attacks have no place in our politics, and will do nothing to help the good people of Tennessee," Obama said. "It's time to turn the page on a politics driven by negativity and division so that we can come together to lift up our communities and our country."

Not great but not bad.

The primary election is today so here's hoping Steve Cohen prevails.

Orwellian

So Congress has before it legislation designed to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. That's fine and dandy.

Now Liddy Dole comes along and moves to have the bill named after the still-dead Jesse Helms.

Jesse Helms.

Local Wingnuttery

Last month:

Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, said he opposed the House's formal recognition of this weekend's 60th annual convention in Harrisburg of the U.S. chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

"The Muslims do not recognize Jesus Christ as God and I will be voting negative," he said on the House floor.

This comment, and the subsequent brouhaha, derailed the resolution and it never came up for a vote - indicating, I think, that an awful lot of PA legislators were looking for an excuse to be mean to Muslims. But I digress. Back to Rep. Metcalfe.

Today brings some amusing news:

The White Christian Nation compares Mr. Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, to prominent white supremacist leader Thomas Robb and says it wants to give him a Christian National Soldier Award during a rally the group is sponsoring Aug. 10 at Adams Township Community Park.

I think all of you will join me in congratulating Rep. Metcalfe for receiving such an honor.

In Re: Jesse Helms

Having decided to spend the holiday weekend being especially lazy I haven't commented on the death of Ol' Jesse. As far as I'm concerned pissing on his grave just isn't disrespectful enough. Perhaps like Oliver Cromwell his corpse should be dug up, dragged through the streets, symbolically executed, and put on display as a warning.

Or perhaps you should just read hilzoy. It would be the Politically Correct™ thing to do.

If It's Election Season...

...it's time for the Republicans to play the bigot card.

The proposed Amendment XXVIII to the Constitution:

Section 1. This article may be cited as the `Marriage Protection Amendment'.

Section 2. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.

While it's not going to even get out of Congress it's worth mentioning because of two co-sponsors: "Diaper Dave" Vitter and Larry "Wide Stance" Craig.

GOP hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Meanwhile in a likely effort to help St. John's flailing campaign the great state of Arizona is putting a ballot initiative up for a vote that would ban marriage amongst Teh Gaiz. This would be the same initiative that was voted down in '06. Try, try again, I suppose.

See, if the Republican Party had a platform that most people could support they wouldn't need to engage in such silliness.

He Lost Me. Perhaps Forever

Just what the hell is wrong with Barack Obama? Even after finally issuing a tepid statement on the matter most aren't impressed. Aravosis:

PS You know Obama's campaign was fully aware of just who this bigot was - this wasn't a mistake. The bigot has been in the news, a lot, for his virulent homophobia. Obama simply didn't care. And he doesn't care now.

I guess this is the Obama campaigns attempt to win some South Carolina redneck votes.

It's time for Obama to quietly exit the stage.

I Guess That's Settled

It's an impossibility for Our Friends on the Right to be anti-Semites (e.g., AnnCoulter). Only Lefties can be anti-Semites.

Who would have guessed?

Settled!

It really was the JEWWS!1! that did it:

State Rep. Ben Bridges denies writing the memo, which attributes the Big Bang theory to Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism.

Bridges has long opposed the teaching of evolution in Georgia classrooms and has introduced legislation requiring only that "scientific fact" be taught.

Marshall Hall, president of the Fair Education Foundation, says the Republican lawmaker gave him approval to write the memo, which has been distributed to legislators in several states, including California and Texas.

[...]

State Rep. Warren Chisum told The Dallas Morning News in Thursday editions he was trying to do a "Good Samaritan" deed for Bridges. "If that's a sin, well, shoot me," he told the newspaper.

An Atheist I may be but when good Christians start organizing against this perversion I'll take them seriously.
