Robert J Samuelson, the Worst Financial Columnist in America and Perhaps the World™, exhorts everyone to vote Clinton for Prez and give Congress to the GOP. His three reasons why:
- Clinton is better than Trump but neither deserve to be President so Congress will be a counterweight
- It should be made clear to Clinton and the Democrats that they have no mandate whatsoever, and to Congressional Republicans that they have no mandate whatsoever
- Divided government will function better than unified government
Now, to that last point: you, dear reader, might point out that we've had divided government for the last six years and it hasn't functioned at all. Well, Mr Samuelson has that covered:
[Gridlock in not] inevitable. For starters, we would have a new cast of characters. Clinton, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) are all “transactional politicians” — they want to get things done — as well as fierce partisans. They also know that the gridlock of the past eight years hasn’t done either party much good. All this creates reasons to reach mutually acceptable agreements.
There’s a huge backlog of undone legislative business: immigration, corporate tax changes, military spending, climate change, Social Security and Medicare, to name a few. These are controversial and costly issues. Not only may one party be unable to push them through Congress; neither party may want to act alone, because that implies accepting all the blame for unpopular policies. Divided government might force both parties to search for common ground.
Stop laughing! Mr Samuelson is a Very Serious Person who has long written for a Very Serious Newspaper!
I said, stop laughing!
Christ, you people...
