I normally stay away from the El Rushbo beat but this is too rich:
Try this. If a lot of African-Americans back in the '60s had guns and the legal right to use them for self-defense, you think they would have needed Selma? I don't know, I'm just asking. If John Lewis, who says he was beat upside the head, if John Lewis had had a gun, would he have been beat upside the head on the bridge?
Need I point out the obvious? Limbaugh might be big and fat but really, he's not an idiot. He's of an age the remember the Greatest Threat to America, 1960s Edition: The Black Panthers, or, to put it another way, armed black people. (And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the the Greatest Threat to America, Early 21st Century edition: the New Black Panther Party -- and they're not even carrying guns!) In short, ask Fred Hampton how people like Rush Limbaugh really feel about Black Men With Guns.
And let's not even get into the patent absurdity of the If Only the Slaves Had Guns rhetoric.
The sad, perhaps frightening, thing is our friends on the right probably believe all this nonsense - not because it's true, but because it's necessary to do so.
