The Choice: Bible Belt Or Civilization
Tomorrow morning the Pennsylvania Senate's Judiciary Committee is hoping to take a step towards joining the Bible Belt by taking up a bill, SB 707, which would amend the state Constitution to ban marriage equality. This little package of bigotry is sponsored by Sen. John Eichelberger (R-Blair Township), who in 2009 said of gays and lesbians: "We're allowing them to exist".
That's mighty big of him, don't you think?
Currently, the bill has 15 co-sponsors (including 2 Democrats) so, if you're a Pennsylvania resident, it's important to contact your senator and yell at him or her - politely, of course - to pledge to vote against SB 707 if it goes to the floor. Keystone Equality has an online form which allows you to send an e-mail to one or more Senators urging them to do just that. You can use the text they provide or write your own (recommended) and they provide essential talking points if you wish to write a snail-mail letter or call. You can find the contact information for your senator here.
This is especially important if your senator sits on the Judiciary Committee.
And while you're doing this, it wouldn't hurt to show your support for SB 935 (co-sponsored by my guy!), which would enable Pennsylvania to join the six states (and the District of Columbia) in taking a stand against bigotry.
Stand up for equal rights!
