So is McCain confusing Sunni and Shia Muslims, then immediately correcting himself more or less worthy of note than Barack Obama claiming Kansas tornados killed 10,000 people, or that he'd visted 57 US states...and had one left?

Unless you think Obama is a drooling moron those were clearly misstatements.

McCain - who fashions himself to be the expert on all things Iraq - has repeatedly made that mistake just as he's repeatedly linked Iran and al-Qaeda despite the fact that they are enemies. In the latter example even Joe Lieberman had to step in and publicly correct his friend. (Also, conflating Iran and al-Qaeda might not be a "mistake" but a deliberate attempt to confuse the issue. See: Iraq and 9/11.)
