Noted In Passing

For some reason Wordpress has banned me from commenting on Wordpress blogs.

If you're on Wordpress don't think I don't read you; it's just that Wordpress...well, y'know (see above).

By the way, anybody at Wordpress: What's your problem???

That's weird. I'm assuming you mean the blogs hosted by Wordpress.com. You should still be able to comment on blogs running Wordpress -- if not, it's something wrong with your browser. You can try posting on mine to experiment if you need to.

What happens when you try to comment?

It looks like I was able to comment at your place, Rob.

But the mystery deepens: I restarted the machine, went to one of the offending blogs with a different browser, wrote a comment, and got this is return from Wordpress: "Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you've already said that!"

FWIW, last night when this first started happening I tried commenting at a friends' blog; I wrote him and he replied that I got caught in a spam filter. This has to be a pretty big spam filter.

Anyway, I'm *very* good with tech issues but this one leave me confuzzled.

The spam filter is probably Akismet and something about your post (or your e-mail address or your blog name) has triggered the spam filter. The spam filter is actually elsewhere and each blog sends comments to it to be evaluated.

You could try contacting the Akismet people. It's possible that someone or something with a similar name or using your e-mail or blog name attempted a spam attack and you got blamed for it. I'm not certain, I've never studied in-depth how that spam filter works.

On the other hand, it's also up and running on my blog, so why wasn't your comment quarantined there?

I'm puzzled.

By any chance were you posting a URL? I've had my comment on my own blog get caught by the spam filter because of too many URLs.

The hell if I know.

By any chance were you posting a URL?

Nope.

It's got to be a spam-cathcher. But it has to be a new one; I had no problem commenting on the offending blogs just three days ago.
